Opening Ceremony / Cérémonie d'ouverture.

“We’re here to share a lot more than sports” says MOPI organizer

The daily grind of the Lycee Louis Massignon was interrupted today with the much awaited arrival of the foreign delegations from Saudi Arabia and Dubai.

Tuesday the 17th of April 2018 marks a historic day for the Lycee Louis Massignon. For the first time ever in the history of the MOPI (Moyen Orient et Péninsule Indienne) zone, the Lycee Louis Massignon, as well as the Paris Sorbonne Abu Dhabi will be hosting the first ever MOPI games. Starting from 2018, the MOPI games will be two days put aside in April for students from all over the MOPI zone to interact through the medium that is sports! And over the next two days, yours truly, as well as the other reporters from the Lycee Louis Massignon will have the honour to be relaying and retelling the events to you! The reader!
While not a day for events, Tuesday marks the beginning of the MOPI games, with the opening ceremony taking place in the evening. As was planned, delegations from all over the zone arrived on the 17th in the afternoon, and, being exhausted from the trip, the first day was reserved for the express purpose of welcoming them into our school environment.
This reporter was able to spend the first hour interviewing a couple foreign students, as well as local ones and gain important insight into the minds of these young athletes. (Stay tuned for more!) After which, everyone was ushered into the main auditorium so that the games could be announced open.
The ceremony began with a series of speeches from the organizers, such as the ever eloquent Mr Alzina, the Sports Teacher Mr Williaume, to whom we owe the above quote, Mr Petillatthe headmaster of the school himself and many more. Every single speaker gave a heartfelt speech about the importance of sports, the idea of teamwork, belonging and unity, after which, every delegation was presented (In music no less!) with a short video featuring the relevant school and country.
If you’ve followed the interviews already posted to the website, you’ve already heard it put beautifully by Mr AlzinaThe main objective is not to breed competition and resentment; it’s to nurture French culture, ethics and philosophy.
And so far, the games seem to be living up to that ambition. The arrival of these delegations marks a new chapter of historic proportions for French Culture and Sports Culture in the Middle East.
Following the ceremony, dinner was served with the delegations (FREE COFFEE!), where athletes and coaches had the opportunity to chat, acting as a sort of meet and greet event, after which the school gradually emptied, with local athletes returning home, and foreign delegations leaving one after the other for their assigned hotels.
